CELTA – About the Course

Who is CELTA for?

CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is an essential qualification for people with little or no previous teaching experience. If you are already teaching English without any specialised training, then the CELTA course will sharpen your teaching.

What does CELTA involve?

The course programme is designed to enable you to develop:

  • an awareness of language
  • basic skills for teaching
  • familiarity with the principles and practice of effective teaching
  • familiarity with appropriate resources and materials

Attendance on a CELTA course of at least 120 contact hours between you and your tutors includes:

  • Input sessions
  • Lesson planning
  • Teaching practice
  • Peer observation
  • Feedback and support

Is there a final exam?

You are assessed continually throughout the course with no final examination.

There are three components of assessment:

  1. Teaching practice
  2. Written assignments
  3. Professional development

Employment after CELTA

Obtaining CELTA is an introduction to the teaching profession. Wherever you work as a teacher, your training development should continue.

After having successfully completed the CELTA course, you may well be in a position to look for a teaching job in Cyprus or overseas.

Please note that obtaining CELTA does not automatically qualify you to teach in any school – you should have the qualifications required nationally.
